Paolo Cognetti, renowned for his international success with The Eight Mountains—a 2017 Premio Strega winner and Cannes 2022 Grand Prix recipient—has made his debut as a filmmaker. His first film, a documentary exploring the beauty and human connection to Monte Rosa, entered the Italian Box Office Top 5 and topped per-screening revenue with over €250,000 in three days. Combining stunning landscapes with intimate encounters, Cognetti offers a deeply personal portrayal of the mountains as a place of profound emotion and belonging.

Enhanced by Ruben Impens‘ stunning cinematography and Vasco Brondi‘s evocative original score, Cognetti brings the audience closer than ever to his world. In an intimate, introspective, and unpredictable way, he reveals Monte Rosa not just as a geographical landmark, but as a space for reflection and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

In the summer of 2022, Italy suffered a period of extensive drought, and for the first time in his life Paolo saw the spring at his home in Estoul run completely dry. This was an event that shocked and upset him so much that it triggered off an idea – the idea to tell the story of the beautiful mountains, the landscapes and glaciers that he called his own, now destined to disappear, or change forever, as a result of climate change.

The song Fiore Mio, featured in the film’s finale and serving as its title inspiration, has long been one of the most beloved tracks by Andrea Laszlo De Simone, who was awarded the César 2024 for Best Original Music in Animal Kingdom—the first Italian artist to ever receive this honor.
